2.88 PB DDN SAN STORAGE

2.88 Peta Bytes (PB) SAN storage with Data Direct Networks (DDN)’s Storage Fusion architecture (SFA) based controllers with Storage Scaler (SS) enclosures managed by Cray’s System Management Workstation (SMW).

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

  • Four cabinets with each having a SFA12K40 controller with managed by a common SMW
  • Five SS 8460 enclosures in each cabinet with 48 NEARLINE SAS Seagate Hard drives
  • Each cabinet contains (48×5) 240 hard drives and the capacity of each hard drive is 3 TB
  • Total raw capacity is (4x5x48) 2.88 PB
  • With RAID 6 configuration, the usable space is 2.1 PB
  • Storage is connected directly to the Cray XC40 compute racks using FDR-infiniband 16Gb FC interconnect

FILESYSTEM USED

  • Lustre 2.7.2.23 filesystem

Lustre is a type of parallel distributed file system, generally used for large-scale cluster computing. The name Lustre is a portmanteau word derived from Linux and cluster. Lustre file system software is available under the GNU General Public License and provides high performance file systems for computer clusters ranging in size from small workgroup clusters to large-scale, multi-site clusters.

Lustre file systems are scalable and can be part of multiple computer clusters with tens of thousands of client nodes, tens of petabytes (PB) of storage on hundreds of servers, and more than a terabyte per second (TB/s) of aggregate I/O throughput. This makes Lustre file systems a popular choice for businesses with large data centers, including those in industries such as meteorology, simulation, oil and gas, life science, rich media, and finance.
